Social Security

To be eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN) you must have authorized employment connected to your student immigration status. ISS will assist students to apply for SSN usually during the third week of the semester. Further announcements will be sent after orientation week.

1) Download the Employment Verification form and email to your employer to fill out and print on University or employer letterhead (see below for an example). Employer signature must be signed with ink pen.

2) Bring signed verification letter to the ISS office between 1pm-4pm to be stamped by an ISS advisor. This letter will be used for the Social Security application.

3) You can start your Social Security number application and make an appointment with the social security office online at www.ssa.gov/ssnumber. You must visit the local social security office with originals & copies of required documents within 45 calendar days of submitting online request.

Bring required immigration documents to the Social Security office:

  • J-1 Exchange Visitors, check with J-1 program sponsor for document needed for SSN.
